Despite its size, Ethiopia still has an underdeveloped cosmetics industry. Basic cosmetic and toiletry products such as shampoos, tooth paste and decorative cosmetics are not produced locally and are often supplied through illegal imports. Some of the smuggled products are product rejects and have not been tested as to their safety for human use.
Taking this into consideration, Berchaco which is a front runner in the cosmetics line, decided to form a joint venture with a Dutch company De Streep Finance B.V. Cosmar which is a private label and contract manufacturer of quality cosmetic products in Indonesia, under its holding company in the Netherlands. The purpose of this joint venture company named as Cosmar East Africa, is to introduce quality decorative and skin care cosmetics to both local and foreign markets at affordable prices, through its own brands and also by manufacturing for third parties, including international brands. It has commissioned an internationally GMP and ISO certified manufacturing plant in Addis Ababa.

|Tiger Brands has signed an agreement with the East African Group plc to create a new food, household, personal care and cosmetics joint venture which will operate in the Ethiopian market. The shareholding in the new company will be 51% by Tiger Brands and the balance of 49% by East African Group (Eth) Plc and its associate companies.. "Ethiopia, which has a population of approximately 85 million, has experienced high GDP growth rates for a number of years," Tiger Brands said in a statement this week.
